Open source
Castpane stands on open source work. The part that speaks the mirroring protocol is free software under the GPL, and its source is public.
How Castpane is split
Castpane is two separate programs on your PC:
- The engine receives the screen and sound and plays them. It is a fork of UxPlay, licensed under GPL-3.0, and runs as its own process. Its full source, including our changes and build scripts, is published.
- The Castpane app is the window you interact with: the connection wizard, settings, the trial and purchase, and the service that Castpane Link talks to. It is closed source. It starts the engine and sends it plain text commands, such as "announce now" or "stop", and reads status messages back. The two programs share no code or internal data.
Castpane Link for Mac is a separate closed source app and contains no GPL code.
Engine source code
Source code will be published at launch.
Our fixes to the Windows build of UxPlay will be offered back to the upstream project.
Credits and licenses
| Project | License | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| UxPlay | GPL-3.0 | The AirPlay mirroring and audio server that the Castpane engine is forked from. |
| RPiPlay | GPL-3.0 | The project UxPlay grew out of: connection handling, mirroring stream and audio code. |
| playfair | GPL-3.0 | The handshake that screen mirroring requires. |
| GStreamer | LGPL-2.1 or later (core and most plugins) | Video and audio decoding and playback inside the engine. |
Thank you to the authors and contributors of these projects. The engine also uses other libraries; the source repository lists each of them with its license.
